Wayanad is a district in the north-eastern part of Kerala state. Kerala is on the west of India, and is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the country. The town of Wayanad is a hill station in the Western Ghats with many ancient ruins, caves, jungle trails and incredible scenery.

Nearby attractions:

Chembra Peak. The highest peak in Wayanad surrounded by tea plantations. A heart-shaped lake called Hridayasarasu close to the summit is the perfect viewing point.

Edakkal Caves. Two natural caves in the remote location of Edakkal, in Wayanad, at 1,200 metres above sea level, with prehistoric carvings dating back 8000 years. It’s a challenging trek up the steep rocky mountains.

Neelimala View Point. A two kilometre hike to see the three-tiered Meenmutty Waterfalls, the largest waterfall in Wayanad at 300 metres.

Banasura Sagar Dam, Kalpetta. The largest dam in India with a spending mountain backdrop.

Pookode Lake, Kalpetta. A fresh water lake in the evergreen forests of Wayanad for boating, a children’s park, aquarium, ideal picnic spot for families and a great place for hiking.

Phantom Rock. Climb up to this rock shaped like a skull for incredible views.

Bamboo Forests, Muthanga. Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere region, Muthanga has teak forests, bamboo groves and swamps, spotted dear, bison, cheetah and wild bear within the Begur, Bandipur, Madumalai and Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuaries.

Soochipara Falls, Kalpetta. An incredible natural feature and viewing spot (also known as the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls).

Thirunelli Temple ancient temple in a valley of North Wayanad surrounded by mountains. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu promised that the water from the nearby spring has the power to wash away sins, hence its popularity as a pilgrim destination.

Jain Temple, Sulthan Battery. Ruined 13th century temple.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Many bird species, Indian Bison, elephant, deer and tiger. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Lakkidi View Point. One of the highest peaks in Wayanad and one of the richest biodiversity areas in the region.

Kuruva Island. A protected delta on river Kabini, home to rare birds, orchids and herbs that are found only in this eco-region.

Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary. A permit and a guide are required for you to set out on this trail, which takes you into dense hill-forests.
