A series of positive reviews on travel website TripAdvisor has led to an 'excellent' rating for Mount Hartman Bay Estate.

Eight Good Strong Men And True

At the Oxford Hawkwell hotel there is nothing so nice as messing about on the river; particulary as the bucolic Iffley lock is adjacent to the hotel leading on to fabulous stretches of water on which to punt or row.

Dressed as washer women reminiscent of the Wind in the Willows disguise of the ever intelligent Mr Toad, eight ‘volunteers’ from the hotel have just completed their first charity row down the Isis river. “Those clever men of Oxford know all there is to be knowed but none of them know half as much as the intelligent Mr. Toad” opined general manager Andrew Richardson whilst trying to explain his shock at the team’s first place.

Wisharting On A Star

While there have been many changes in the fabric and feel of the building it is on the plate where the work of Martin Wishart has transfixed the attention and the tastebuds of the new believers in the club dining areas.

The Growler flask has just arrived fresh from the engravers and this unusual trophy will form a very special part of the annual good service awards.

Moving On Up

The clearance of No 21, Portman Square is now complete and work has just begun on the refurbishment of this fine grade 1 building to link it to Home House.

Scheduled to open at the end of the year. “It will enable us to increase the size of our spa, expand the number of treatments and equipment available, add more bedrooms and much more meeting and relaxation space for our members” said Caroline King general manager.

‘Ladies Who Lunch’ at Stanley House raise over £4000 for Stanley Grange

More than 200 ladies attended a glittering ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ that featured internationally-renowned hairdresser Andrew Collinge.  They raised a magnificent £4,300 for Stanley Grange at Samlesbury, which is just one of eight communities of the national charity CARE, providing support through residential accommodation and day services for men and women with a learning disability.

The afternoon, sponsored by Lancashire Life, also included a stunning fashion show organised by michelle. b whose acclaimed designer store is based in Barrowford, Lancashire.

General manager Michael Burn explains, ”we have just launched our new state of the art conference facilities which now include Wi-Fi and air conditioning. To add such 21st century detail to rooms blessed with 700 year old inglenook fireplaces could have been difficult but the reaction from our guests to these improvements in our much loved historic building has been incredibly positive. Now if I can just mount our I-pod’s speakers from the minstrels gallery!!!!!!”

Spaghetti Bolognese is no longer a room service option. For the tired traveller, this is a problem...it was so appealing in its 'deconstructed' presentation (separate bowls of sauce, pasta and cheese) and was just the kind of comfort food desired after a full day of hustling through London's bustle. It was a great Spag Bol! Fully within the ballpark of the Chateau Marmont room service Spag Bol or its purist rival served at the Hotel Baglioni, Bologna. I mourn this dish's demise and have commenced a lobby for the Home House executive powers to reconsider their decision.

A quality 'room service' Spag Bol is a matter of serious importance. It is in the family of dishes that is perfect for solitary reflection when working away from home or overseas. It enables creatures of habit, away from familiar surroundings to reconnect to the force of gravity, a certain pleasant weightiness in the pits of our stomachs...Spag Bol functions as a powerful non narcotic antidepressant.

Bespoke Employee Stars on TV

The Restaurant show serialised on BBC 2 from wed the 29th August features a Bespoke Hotels ‘star employee’.

Edward Pajak who, together with his brother, enters the competitive spirit of the reality catering show scores heavily with his excellent customer skills and all round knowledge.

We were delighted to release him for the filming which took 9 weeks but even more pleased to welcome him back to work.

A veteran of 3 Bespoke Hotels Edward has his sights firmly set on becoming a general manager by the time he is 30.

Still only 25 he reflects “It was a wonderful opportunity to move from hotel showbiz into the world of film showbiz and almost as exacting. But I have no plans to move into theatre just yet.”

Bedroom Refurbishment

A local designer, Roger Balmer Design, has been appointed to refurbish all 49 bedrooms, commencing 7th January 2008, at a cost of £1M.

The Castle gains four stars!

The Castle has been upgraded from a three to a four star rating with a silver award in the Quality in Tourism rankings, compiled as part of the VisitBritain initiative.

The silver award signifies that The Castle consistently achieves standards in areas such as service and cleanliness that are above the standard four star rating.  The award follows the Castle's retention of its Michelin star for this year and its restaurant's listing among the country's top 30 in the 2008 Good Food Guide.

Kenyan Chef joins Marwell Hotel

John Oyaro brings the real Africa to Marwell Hotel. Born and bread in Nairobi, Kenya, John brings with him a flair of African taste and tradition. "I hope that the menu that I have created will appeal to all palates" said John. He added " I am delighted to join this friendly and unique hotel which truly is- 'Out of Africa in Hampshire' ".

Aberavon Beach achieves Blue Flag award

Aberavon Beach has achieved the prestigious Blue Flag status for the first time.

The flag is awarded not just for the quality of the water, but also for the quality of the facilities provided. Neath Port Talbot Council leader Derek Vaughan said water tests had confirmed the beach now met European environmental standards. This, he said, combined with massive improvements to facilities along the length of the seafront, such as new signs and lighting, had helped them achieve the accolade. Mr Vaughan said the number of visitors to the beach had been growing and this was likely to continue with the blue flag status. He said "This is wonderful news for Neath Port Talbot. The authority has invested a great deal of time and money in Aberavon Beach, to create an attractive environment. This Blue Flag status is recognition that our work is paying dividends. Aberavon Beach is one of the gems of the county borough and is an attractive place to visit for residents and tourists."

Ed Pajak - recent contestant on the BBC’s ‘THE RESTAURANT’ - to be new manager of The Four Alls

The newly re-furbished Four Alls pub & restaurant in Welford-on-Avon, Stratford-upon-Avon will be opening its doors for business once again on Friday November 30th, after being devastated in the July floods. The business was very badly hit, with the River Avon flowing directly through the premises at one point, resulting in staff being airlifted to safety.

Bespoke Hotels, who now operate the business, are excited to announce the appointment of a new manager. Ed Pajak, who recently appeared as a contestant with his brother on the BBC’s “The Restaurant” featuring Raymond Blanc, will now be managing the business and providing fresh ideas and inspiration in order to offer a completely new dining experience for the area. Since July the business has been completely refurbished in spicy Mediterranean tones providing a warm and cosy atmosphere, and now boasts new head chef Neil Clarke (formerly of Cotswold House & The Baraset Barn) and delicious tapas in addition to its main dining menu.
 
Ed Pajak commented: ‘We are now offering an all new dining experience here at The Four Alls, with new interior décor, a new highly acclaimed chef, new menu and new management. Our objective is to deliver excellent customer service, great quality food at a reasonable price and an overall enjoyable meal out for all. Now we are members of The Scotch Beef Club, we will be specialising in succulent steaks on our dining menu. We are aiming to fill the gap between the many expensive ‘special occasion’ gastro pubs in the area and basic pub grub.”

Ed will be hosting an opening party for the villagers of Welford on Friday November 30th as a way of thanking them for their support during the events of July this year. Villagers have been personally invited to this community event where they will have the opportunity to sample the new tapas menu, while being entertained by The Dr Teeth Big Band.
Many of Ed’s fellow contestants from “The Restaurant” will also be there to support him in his new venture.

Ed continues.. “I’m really looking forward to establishing the business as part of the community and getting to know the locals. Don’t feel like cooking? Then walk down to The Four Alls and enjoy our homely welcome & honest food. We’re also planning a series of special events for the New Year. We want to give every guest of ours a reason to return.”

The Four Alls has a beautiful riverside location on the banks of The Avon at Binton Bridges, in between Welford-on-Avon and Binton, on the B439 that runs between Stratford and Bidford.

AWARD FOR GRAN HOTEL SON NET

VOTED MOST EXCELLENT HOTEL IN EUROPE & THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION BY CONDE NAST JOHANSENS

Mallorca, Tuesday, 6 November 2012. Gran Hotel Son Net has been voted “Most Excellent Hotel in Europe and the Mediterranean Region” in the prestigious 2013 Conde Nast Johansens Awards.

The awards are based on the combined results of the Conde Nast Johansens online voting system, guest survey reports, inspector feedback and Conde Nast head office.

David Stein, owner of Gran Hotel Son Net said: “This is a spectacular achievement for us. We are delighted and proud to have won this prestigious award, which is the culmination of all the hard work of the Son Net Net Team under the direction of General Manager, Bjorn Wild.”

Each hotel is approved for recommendation following an annual inspection by one of the team of experienced inspectors. If a property does not reach Conde Nast Johansens standards it is rejected. This maintains the integrity and quality of the brand and therefore the trust of Conde Nast readers.

FOOD ON THE 'MOVIE'

When Shortlist - the half-million-circulation magazine for men - decided that they wanted a leading chef to teach its readers how to recreate iconic dishes from the movies, they turned to a Bespoke man. Dave Watts is head chef at the Cotswold House Hotel, and he willingly volunteered to cook up real-life versions of Hollywood classics.

Dave started the series with the behind-bars pasta meal from Good Fellas. Here's the feature and here's the clip - 'okay boys, let's eat!'

For next month, Shortlist have sent Dave the following clip from Pulp Fiction. The Big Kahuna burger ('the cornerstone of a nutritious breakfast') should be no problem for a man of Dave's abilities - but the rather unnerving atmosphere may be best left to Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and director Quentin Tarantino! We prefer the genteel environment of the Cotswold House Hotel and other Bespoke properties, but as Jackson himself says, 'this is a tasty burger'.

Diglis House is undergoing change

Diglis House Hotel is currently a 26 bedroom, 18th Century Georgian house, set on the banks of the River Severn, within easy walking distance of the city centre of Worcester, Worcester Cathedral and a few minutes walking distance from Worcester Porcelain. But change is on the way.

It is currently being totally refurbished, both bedrooms and public areas and a further extension is underway to add a further 2 bedrooms and a modern conference facility for up to 100 delegates, opening in September 2008.

Robin Sheppard, Managing Director of Bespoke Hotels said, "we are very pleased that Diglis House has come on board and are looking forward to the completion of the works that will transform the property into a hotel and conference facility for the 21st century."

'ONE TO WATCH'

Boutique Hotel News features Bespoke Hotels chairman, Robin Sheppard, in its 'ones to watch' feature this month alongside, amongst others, Hollywood A-lister Robert de Niro.

The addition of 34 Oxford Hotels in 2012 has raised the profile of Bespoke Hotels, and the magazine reports that the chairman of Bespoke Hotels "has seen his company's portfolio enlarge considerably over 2012, giving it a total of 97 properties under management worldwide".

Boutique Hotel News also reports that, "Bespoke has moved in to the top end of the London market, with the opening of the 36-bedroom Wellesley in Knightsbridge, owned by Arab Investments' City and Country Hotels"

2013 looks set to be another busy year for Bespoke Hotels.
 

The Swan celebrates both Vegetarian and English Wine Weeks

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week (Monday 19th to Sunday 25th May) a special deluxe, vegetarian menu is available at the Rosette Gallery Restaurant at The Swan in Lavenham, Suffolk.The Green Menu is designed for those who shun meat – but not good food. It features exotic, gourmet flavours. David Ryan, the Head Chef at The Swan, says: “Vegetarians get a raw deal when it comes to fine dining. Even chefs in good restaurants tend to think that a mushroom lasagne or spaghetti Napolitana is an acceptable meat-free dish. Three courses cost £31.95.

 

From 24th May to 1st June the Swan will also be celebrating English Wine Week. A specially designed 3 course menu is on offer for £31.95 and there are specially selected English wines available for each course by the glass

WILLIAM DALRYMPLE : LITERARY LUNCH Friday, 11th July, 2008

As a best-selling and multi-prize winning author, William Dalrymple is today one of the world’s most celebrated travel writers and a commentator whose reach extends to history, biography, spirituality and mysticism in both the broadcast medium and the printed word.  His books include the highly acclaimed In Xanadu, which he wrote at the age of twenty-two, City of Djinns, The Age of Kali and White Mughals. 

The programme will begin at 12:00 noon when William will talk about his work and experiences.  Lunch will follow at 1:00 pm and there will be plenty of time to discuss his books and have your copies signed by the author.  Tickets for the event are £39 per person to include the presentation, a three-course lunch, wine and coffee.

HAPPY BRAZZDAY TO YOU

Champagne corks are poised to pop later this month when BRAZZ celebrates its first ten years as the brasserie-next-door to The Castle at Taunton.

Two separate celebration evenings are planned and the notching up of the first decade will also coincide with the launch of a new wine off-sales initiative, with generous discounts available for BRAZZ card holders.

The first birthday celebration will be a wine tasting evening on Thursday June 19 at 6.30pm. There will be a chance to learn about wines from buyers for St Austell and Walter Hicks Wines, and to enjoy them with a selection of canapés. 

Those up for sampling will include the ones chosen for the new off-sales operation being launched that evening and offered with 10 per cent discount to BRAZZ card holders.  Jazz musicians Charlie Hearnshaw and Maxine Green will be providing the entertainment. Tickets are £10 each.

On June 21 the BRAZZ birthday party will be a black tie evening, starting at 7pm with champagne and canapés followed by a three-course dinner, a magician and a disco. Tickets are £59 each.

Home House Edinburgh closes following strategic review

Following a strategic review of the business, Home House announces the closure of their Edinburgh Club. Home House Edinburgh, which opened its doors in March 2007, was the first outpost of the flagship Home House in London's Portman Square. 

David Johnson, Director, Home House, comments; “Over the last 18 months we have invested heavily in the Edinburgh Club and as a result have developed a strong membership base in the Capital. Unfortunately however, actual usage of the Club has not been as strong as we had anticipated. This factor, combined with the rare opportunity to increase and improve our services in Home House London unfortunately left us with only one choice. “Although we are extremely disappointed to be leaving the City, we will be honouring agreements with our staff, members and suppliers.

All of our Edinburgh members have been written to personally and the remainder of their memberships will be refunded.  All of our staff will receive generous redundancy packages and are being offered assistance in finding alternative employment.

“We are currently in discussions with a number of interested parties about acquiring the building and are hoping for a quick resolution.”

All change at Aberavon

 

bespoke has appointed a new General Manager to the Aberavon Beach Hotel - Stuart McManus.  Stuart has a wealth of experience in the industry, latterly with Marriott International in Bristol and Manchester.  Stuart said of his appointment, “I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.  The hotel has been transformed recently with a complete refurbishment programme, creating a modern relaxed atmosphere that we believe will appeal to business and leisure visitors as well as weddings and conference organisers.”

Andrew Richardson takes the helm at Home House

Andrew Richardson, one of Bespoke’s Regional Managers, has taken the helm at Home House as General Manager, whilst still overseeing the Oxford Hawkwell House hotel.  Andrew is no stranger to Bespoke as he was previously GM of Billesley Manor, before it changed hands.  Andrew comes from an F&B background rising through the ranks in both UK and International hotels before becoming Executive Chef at the Royal Berkshire, then to Hong Kong where he was MD of  8 restaurants before moving into general hotel management.

 

Andrew says, “taking on the challenge of Home House, a private member’s club with a high profile is a new challenge for me - one which I am both enjoying and relishing.  With the extension coming on stream in the autumn we will be able to both provide existing members with more facilities and expand our membership base.”

Sri Lankan-born Indunil Upatissa, won the Best Curry category in the Great British Pub Awards to follow up his success in the same competition last year.

The 40-year-old curry king, who moved to England with his family six years ago, beat off competition from two other short-listed chefs thanks to his mouth-watering Ceylon-style yel-low seafood and coconut curry recipe and his ability to take ancient Indian recipies and give them a modern twist!

Sous Chef, Chris Henderson, is delighted to be working with Indunil and has recently spent time with him at a sister Bespoke Hotel learning his award winning skills. “It has been a great opportunity learning from such an experienced and talented Chef such as Indunil and I have really enjoyed my time with him and have learnt so much” says Chris, aged 25 who has worked at The Talbot since January 2011.

He continues “It will be a pleasure to work alongside him at The Talbot and am very much looking forward to sharing his wonderful dishes with our regular diners, offering something different with something for everyone with dishes from hot to mild including vegetarian op-tions”.

Emerald Street magazine thought the bar at 10 Manchester Street ‘warm and friendly’, while the burger was ‘one of the best we’ve had’, and ‘we’ve had a lot of burgers’, they confessed.

GQ magazine suggested that ‘there are few more agreeable ways of marking a momentous event than a fine cigar and a cocktail’. Home House is growing

Home House, our member’s only club located in Portman Square is opening new facilities this autumn as it looks to grow its membership.

Marwell’s Service gets high recognition

Anzelika Boltrouka the Head receptionist at the Marwell Hotel near Winchester came
second in the bespoke Hotel Service Awards 2008.  The awards are judged by
nominations sent in from heads of departments and general managers from all the
hotels in the bespoke collection.  They are then reviewed by the directors and two
winners are selected.  Her prize was a 2 night break at any of the hotels in the
collection and a bottle of champagne

Aberavon Beach Hotel short-listed for two Swansea Bay Tourism Awards

Aberavon Beach Hotel has been short-listed for two prestigious Swansea Bay Tourism Awards. The hotel has been shortlisted in the following categories: Best Large Hotel and Best Contribution to International Tourism.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea on Thursday 20th November 2008. Since bespoke Hotels took over the management of Diglis House, we have been overseeing the development of a new extension that will add a further 2 bedrooms and a modern conference facility overlooking the riverbank  We will then be in a position to upgrade the existing bedrooms and public areas.

Bermondsey Square takes off

bespoke's first new build development in Bermondsey Square in London is taking shape and is scheduled to open its door in early 2009.  The famous Antique Market that thrives every Friday is the location for our first new build hotel. This boutique hotel is a true indicator that Bermondsey is the new place to be seen.

Many of the 79 bedrooms will incorporate panoramic views over London from the Eye to the Gherkin and in the Penthouse Suites, you can sip your drink, relax in your own hot tub and enjoy the London skyline from your verandah.

14th April Cool new Hotel opening in London

So there we were, thinking the rockstar Sanctum Soho was the hotel we should most look forward to opening this spring. But then we found out about the Bermondsey Square Hotel, which is on course to open on April 14.

OK so south-of-the-river Bermondsey’s not exactly a central location, and it definitely isn’t on the tourist bus routes. In fact, in the past, Bermondsey wasn’t the most pleasant of areas. But it’s been tarting itself up over the past few years, and has now become a pretty trendy part of London.Time Out recently called Bermondsey Street the “funkiest newcomer” of London’s streets.

Although it’s not yet party central like the East End, Bermondsey has good shopping, bars and restaurants. And it’s just down the road from Tate Modern, the Globe Theatre, and, more importantly, the foodfest that is Borough Market. The Tower of London is just across the river, too.

The hotel (part of Bespoke Hotels) looks pretty nice too--iMacs, wetrooms and loft rooms with terraces and even a hot tub in one of them. And with pillow fights apparently on room service, and the restaurant menu naming dishes after our floppy-haired mayor (the Boris Burger), it’s calling itself a “uniquely eccentric hotel.” We have high hopes – especially as opening rates start from £89 ($127). Comedian Rob Brydon returns home for NSPCC luncheon

Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon returned home to Port Talbot last month to attend the annual NSPCC luncheon at the Aberavon Beach Hotel.

His mother Joy Brydon-Jones has organised the luncheon at the hotel in aid of the NSPCC every year since the Baglan branch she belongs to celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000.

Despite the credit crunch there was no fall-off in the demand for tickets, with all 280 snapped up and a waiting list formed before the lunch was even properly advertised. Rob Brydon was the guest in 2001, just after he won his British Comedy Award, with subsequent speakers including Owen Money, Max Boyce and Ray Gravell.

The luncheon, which included a raffle was expected to raise around £9000 for the children's charity.

ROYAL OPENING FOR LATEST BESPOKE HOTEL

THE CORNWALL HOTEL, SPA & ESTATE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY HRH THE COUNTESS OF WESSEX
 
On Monday 8 March 2010 HRH The Countess of Wessex officially opened the Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate.

In search of Suffolk's Champion Sausage

Building on the successes of last year’s awards, which was deservedly won by John Hutton of Earl Soham for his outstanding Pork and Apricot sausage, The Swan Hotel at Lavenham will once again be hosting The Swan Suffolk Sausage Awards, in conjunction with National Sausage Week.

Aberavon Beach Wins Seaside Award

The prestigious Seaside Award flag is going up at Aberavon Beach after it passed its toughest test with flying colours.

Not only did the beach meet the European standard for bathing water quality, it also had to tick off a list of land based criteria including dog ban areas, disabled facilities and general safety.

Judges were satisfied the infrastructure, environmental credentials and overall management was of a consistenly high standard.

Neath Port Talbot Council leader Derek Vaughan said the Seaside Award status was a major coup for the beach. He said "This announcement is great news for Neath Port Talbot. Aberavon Beach is a major asset for the borough and attracts visitors from all over South West Wales. We have a commitment to make Aberavon Beach an attractive venue for local residents and the thousands of visitors who come to the area. We have invested in the future of the seafront and this is recognition that we are on the right track. Families need look no further for things to do on one of Wales's longest sandy beaches, which boasts an Aquasplash playground, children's play areas and grassed open areas providing hours of family fun. The Celtic Trail, part of the National Cycle network, runs along the promenade at Aberavon and is one of its most leisurely and enjoyable sections with fantastic views."

GREEN LIGHT FOR STANLEY

Stanley House hotel in Lancashire has been given the green light for a £15m development that will see the property almost double in size.

The 12-bedroom hotel, which houses the fine dining restaurant Cassis, will add 40 bedrooms, a spa complete with a hydrotherapy pool and Jacuzzi, and a fitness centre.

It also plans to add a 90-seat brasserie that will overlook the Ribble Estuary.

Detailed plans and designs will be drawn up and finalised this year, with tenders being invited during 2010 for a start to the build in 2011.

General manager Oliver Cooke said he was thrilled about the project.

“It will allow us to bring to the beautiful Ribble Valley something it so richly deserves,” he said.

ITALIAN JOB AT BERMONDSEY SQUARE

Pick-axe handles, menacing stares and threatening thuggery are all part of the build-up to this year’s Silverstone Classic on July 24-26, for event partner Hagerty International, the classic and collector car insurance specialists.

Reflecting the liberated fun of classic car ownership, Hagerty’s show theme at this, the major celebration of classic motoring and motorsport, celebrates the 40th Anniversary of what has become one of the iconic fun feature films of all time, 'The Italian Job’, which was first shown on June 2, 1969.

Acknowledging the silver screen success with a re-creation on their stand, Hagerty will feature a clone of the patriotic red, white and blue Mini trio - their rumbustious crew in full 'Italian Job' retinue. This follows a celebration drive from London’s newly re-opened Bermondsey Square Hotel to Silverstone, for the press preview to the Classic.

Sadly, the gold bullion is missing from Hagerty’s display, but the actual Jaguar E-Type from the film will be on show alongside the Minis, and ‘doubles’ of other star cars are planned, including the iconic Lamborghini Miura. All are displayed by kind courtesy of Hagerty clients.

Hagerty's Marketing Director, Marcus Atkinson, commented: "We all share in the enjoyment of ownership of a classic car - and hence our fun re-creation of 'The Italian Job', which is also our celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Mini.”

The development has thus created a thriving and positive atmosphere for local residents, one that they have readily embraced.”

WE LOVE THEIR ATTITUDE

Style magazine Attitude reviews The Bermondsey Square Hotel in their August issue. This is what they said: "Locations don't get much better than being slap-bang in the heart of buzzy Bermondsey which is humming with activity. The property is infused with Sixties retro styling and Austin Powers would no doubt feel right at home here, yeah baby. Enjoy eating and drinking out side in the square when you ofder from the eccentric English menu at Alfie's restaurant, with many of the ingredients being sourced from nearby Borough Market. The kooky lesbian on bar duty made a mean espresso martini and we'll be back for more of them."

Yeah, baby, indeed. 

And talking of the International Man of Mystery, London Lite newspaper called The Bermondsey Square Hotel, "a venue so retro cool you can imagine Austin Powers grooving round with a raspberry martini before heading off to one of the four penthouse loft suites for a shag. The bar feels like the chill-out zone of a recording studio."

And, as if that wasn't enough to send the staff of Bespoke's newest hotel strutting down Carnaby Street in ruffled dickie, velvet slacks and chelsea boots, then they were shagstatic when they read what The Times had to say:

"Inside it's chic, stylish and fun — in an upmarket 60s-inspired kind of way. I booked a Friday night stay expecting it to be relatively quiet as the hotel had barely been open a month. That was misperception number two. When I arrived, the bar area was pulsing. Through large glass windows I could see people draped over black leather sofas and pouffes while others perched on bright red stools around the central bar. The bathroom was large for an inner-city hotel room, with a shower over the bath and double marble sinks. I rate a good shower and this one was fantastic — no running around under the rose to get wet here. Turn it on and the illuminated showerhead, which is the size of two large dinner plates embedded in the ceiling, drenches you from top to toe. If that wasn't wet enough, when I ventured outside onto the room's wrap-around deck, I discovered a huge eight-seater spa."

CLUMBER PARK DRAWS PRAISE

It's always a nervous moment when you discover that a journalist has been staying in the hotel with the intention of reviewing the place. But the staff at the Clumber Park Hotel and Spa just seem to take it in their stride.

This is what The Times had to say after reviewing the Hotel this summer: "the waiters were just super - I cannot praise the hotel's staff enough. I don't know whether it's just that being London-based I've been starved of genuinely friendly service, or that Nottinghamshire people are particularly warm or even that Clumber Park's management has done a superb job of finding the best people, but they were all delightful."

The London-based Times needn't have worried about the North/South divide, because it's clear that local people appreciate Clumber Park's staff just as much. This is what the Hartlepool Mail thought:

"There are some hotels where you feel so relaxed and there is so much to keep you occupied that you can spend a whole weekend never stepping foot outside its grounds. One such hotel is the Clumber Park Hotel and Spa near Workshop in Nottinghamshire. It would be difficult to leave after a weekend break feeling anything other than rejuvenated and stress-free. During my stay, the restaurant staff were consistently attentive and knowledgeable, very personable, professional and friendly."

Cutting down on ‘food miles’ and sourcing food locally is what most responsible bars and restaurants do today. But at The Horse & Groom in Charlton, nr Malmesbury, Wiltshire, using local produce takes on a whole new meaning.

Here guests are invited to the back garden to search for their own freshly laid eggs at breakfast, as this popular inn has added a dozen chickens to their team! The staff are on hand to fetch the free-range eggs, but nevertheless some guests have embraced the idea with gusto. Every day, the chickens lay enough eggs to cater for breakfast, with eggs left over used in the preparation of other dishes.

Probably the freshest food offer in Wiltshire, raising chickens is the brainchild of resident manager Emma Dall, a lady of action when it comes to serving good, fresh, local food. Cosy in their chicken house at night, the chickens are free to roam during the day, and are kept in a happy and natural environment. ‘These are super healthy chickens’ she says, ‘because we feed them our own fresh vegetable leftovers from the kitchen, and we also waste less by recycling some of our food waste organically’.

Now Emma wants her chickens named, and is inviting the locals to suggest 12 names, offering a meal for two with champagne as a reward for the best suggestions. Look out for the ‘Name the Chickens’ suggestion box at the bar.

HEAD CHEF APPOINTED AT THE CORNWALL

Tom Bradbury is returning to his St Austell roots and taking up the role of Head Chef at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate, a Bespoke hotel opening in February 2010.

Tom, of Fifteen and Watergate Bay fame, started his career at Catering College in St Austell before following the bright lights of the city to London where he took the position of Commis Chef working for Paul Gayler at the 5-star Lanesborough Hotel.

Joining the exodus of hot London-based chefs heading south-west, Tom headed back to Cornwall after some years in the capital, starting at The Fowey Hotel where he worked for four years as second chef, before accepting the position of Executive Head Chef at The Hotel & Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay. Tom's latest venture at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate will see him taking charge of the kitchen set up and the day to day running of both the Arboretum and Acorns restaurants, overseeing menus, ensuring consistency and productivity.

This addition to the Bespoke Hotels collectionis due to open on 24 February 2010. The Cornwall Hotel, Spa & Estate is a secluded retreat set in 43 acres of beautiful Victorian parkland and is home not only to a new luxury hotel, but two restaurants, The Clearing Spa, fitness facilities and 22 luxury woodland homes for sale and holiday rental.

Tom’s new role will see him heading up The Arboretum, a fine dining restaurant overlooking The Parkland Terrace, croquet lawn and Estate. In addition Tom will provide guidance for Acorns – a family brasserie with a more informal menu .

11 OUT OF 12 AIN'T BAD

It's a situation that could make the most experienced of Chefs just a touch nervous. American food writer and reviewer, Don Libey stayed at Bespoke's Madison Hotel near Swindon recently, and ate dinner in, not once, not twice, but 11 times during his 12-night stay.

The Madison team need not have worried. The Zagat's reviewer and book publisher, emailed afterwards to 'applaud the cooking and the skill of the Chef'. Each of his meals, he wrote, 'has been a pleasant surprise consisting of layers of flavors and excellent preparation and presentation'.

The dining room staff - none of whom was aware of Mr Libey's vocation while he was at the Madison - also did themselves proud. They were described as 'talented, most attentive, most kind and polite'.

Well done to everyone at the Madison.

Minorities Become Majorities at The Talbot

MINORITIES BECOME MAJORITIES’ AT THE TALBOT, RIPLEY

Showing true community spirit, The Talbot Inn at High Street, Ripley never fails to listen to its guests an on 12 November is launching a menu for those who need to follow a special diet.

Food allergies can restrict sufferers to very few choices on a restaurant menu, and because they are always a minority, they are even discouraged from eating out altogether, thus also missing the enjoyment and company of friends and family.

Always at the forefront of new initiatives and showing once more a tremendous sense of community, the award-winning Talbot has gone all out to develop a special menu just for these ‘minorities’.

Launching on Friday 12 November, The Talbot will only serve a special dietetic menu, aptly called ‘Minorities become Majorities’. Each dish on the menu is specially made to meet the needs of Vegetarians, Vegans, Celiacs and those on Dairy Free diets. Dishes containing nuts can also be prepared ‘nut-free’. In a bold move, no other menu will be available on the night, thus encouraging all guests to try this alternative way of eating, and a different way of preparing all-time favourite dishes, whilst ensuring that these specific ingredients do not come into contact with generic foods in the kitchen. The surprise is the taste, because everything is just deliciously good.

Thai style cauliflower and carrot terrine with spicy peanut dressing at £6.95 for example, ticks all the boxes, because it’s vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and suitable to celiacs. Utterly delicious is the Plum and apple pork tenderloin with fondant potato and mustard cabbage at £16.95, which is both dairy free and good for celiacs, whilst indulgent desserts are finally guilt free, as even the Dark chocolate torte with a twist at £6.15 or the Dairy free ice cream at £5.75 are suitable to all diets. Bespoke Hotels Ltd has signed heads of terms with Newbury Racecourse for a ten year management contract of the racecourse’s new 120 bedroom hotel which is set to open in 2014.

The hotel is part of a multi-million pound redevelopment scheme of the 320 acre, 105 year old racecourse site which received outline planning consent in April this year.

The hotel, named The Newbury, will be owned by Newbury Racecourse plc and operated by Bespoke Hotels Ltd, to further the vision for Newbury Racecourse to develop a truly 365 day a year business and become a prized one-stop-shop venue in the lucrative conference and events business.

The Newbury will also cater for local residents and businesses, as well as enhancing the experience of the 200,000 annual racegoers with a 100 cover bistro restaurant, coffee shop, and bar which will become the heart of the new residential community on the site.

But we won't hear a word said against any of the lovely writers and editors who have turned up unannounced at Bespoke Hotels across the UK and Caribbean during the last year, pen and notebook in hand, and pronounced their verdicts.

THE HORSE AND GROOM

Initial feedback from the journalist who reviewed the restaurant at The Horse and Groom in Charlton, Wiltshire suggests that the final piece could be positive!! He emailed to say, 'The meal was a work of genius. I've eated meals costing five times the price and been less saitsifed. Every plaudit directed at the place is justified.'

TEN MANCHESTER STREET

So December’s In Style magazine liked the Cocktail Masterclass at Ten Manchester Street Hotel, while Wedding magazine reported, ‘For a touch of city chic, look no further. THE FROGMILL

Someone from Tatler got a decent gig too.....heading off to Jamaica to take a peek at Jake’s Hotel, and concluding, ‘Jakes is exactly what you want when you hit the reggae island – a little pocket of quirky, eccentric sandiness. Dougie, the barman, makes a wicked rum and coke. The spa workout massages leave you as liquid as melted butter. Then there’s a boat to take you to the Pelican Bar – a wooden shack on stilts in the middle of the ocean.’

Back home, meanwhile, GQ Magazine discovered Bermondsey Street and pronounced it ‘the coolest road in the capital’, with ‘hip hotels, recherché restaurants, go-to gastro pubs and a new White Cube gallery’. Our very own Bermondsey Square Hotel was described as ‘super-stylish boutique hotel’.
 

FLAT DAY ENDS IN SUCCESS

Congratulations to the team at The Carnarvon Arms, who came first in the Newbury Annual Pancake Race, beating 24 teams for local businesses, and generating plenty of publicity. The team were presented with their prize by the Mayor of Newbury in the town market-place.

PRETTY NEAR PERFECT..

They said it....The Sunday Times Travel magazine, that is - about The Bermondsey Square Hotel, which they recently included in their '100 City Break Hotels for £100 or less'. They went on to say that B2 is special because, 'the good-value Loft Rooms are pure rock 'n' roll'.

And, if you didn't know 'Who's Jack', then you do now. It's a very trendy magazine and website, which just happens to have described The New Ellington Hotel as 'a beautifully redecorated, Jazz inspired boutiqute hotel'. So now you know! The were also rather pleased that 'the hotel boasts the most stocked gin bar we have seen to date wiht helpful staff on hand to make you the perfect cocktail'.

£500 Raised for Campdens' Edge

The winners of the 2nd Oxford Brookes 'Bespoke Hotels Group - Entrepreneur of the Year' have been announced. As the final assessment for their Hospitality & Tourism Entrepreneurship module, Oxford Brookes University students had to pitch in 'Dragon's Den' style an innovative hospitality or tourism product or service to a panel of successful hospitality and tourism entrepreneurs, gathered at the Bermondsey Square Hotel in London.

Roberto Daniele, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Marketing at Oxford Brookes commented:

"As the industry requires more and more of innovation to maintain the competitiveness of its products, it is important that we ensure that graduates entering the field become drivers of entrepreneurialism and innovation. MIDSUMMER NIGHT

Following the success of ‘Hotel Confessions’ , a short play acted out within a single bedroom at The Bermondsey Square Hotel in front of a very select audience of just 10 people per performance, the Southwark Playhouse has announced a further collaboration with this Bespoke hotel.

General manager of The Bermondsey Square Hotel, Robert Holland, is looking forward to the new production: "This production should be a lot of fun, and very much in keeping with the ethos of the hotel - which is to be part of the community, part of the 'square', and always with an eye on creating a lively atmosphere within the reception and bar areas of The Bermondsey Square Hotel. I'm sure our guests will enjoy this and embrace the idea of an interactive theatre experience."

Starting in early August directed by Jayne Dickinson, produced by Jennifer Bryden, a special production of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream aims to bring the joy of theatre and live performance to the community of Bermondsey Square.

Characters from the play will interact with the general public before the show around the Square and in the foyer of The Bermondsey Square Hotel. There will also be live music that can be heard throughout the Square and a stage design that will flow into the Square making it very much part of the performance for the local community.

“We are thrilled to be involved with this project, especially as we will be using such an unconventional space that will provide us with the opportunity to bring theatre to the community,” says director Jayne Dickinson.

Tickets for the production will be available from the reception of The Bermondsey Square Hotel.

Jason Henzell, owner of Jakes, a Bespoke Hotel on Treasure Beach, Jamaica is offering guests a room upgrade until 15 December. All you have to do is take a football with you. You get one night's upgrade for each ball you take. We need footballs for a local community sports park opening in November," says Jason. The 17-acre sports park, with four football and three cricket pitches is being developed by local charity Breds.

HOTEL GB OPENS 1 OCTOBER

Hotel GB opens Monday 1 October, with the setting revealed as Bepoke's Bermondsey Square Hotel. Gordon Ramsay and Mary Portas will be joined by a raft of other Channel 4 talent - including Gok Wan, Phil Spencer, Dr Christian Jessen, Kirstie Allsop and Katie Piper - when they take over the Bermondsey Square Hotel, which has been fully rebranded Hotel GB.

HUMBER ROYAL ATTRACTS A STAR

The Humber Royal has become Grimsby’s first large four star hotel, following Visit England’s decision to award an additional star.

Quality in Tourism, the inspection body for Visit England, carried out an anonymous visit to the Humber Royal to check on customer service, food and product quality, room service and overall cleanliness.

General manager Anne Bennett, who received the good news, commented: “We are absolutely delighted – it is a great tribute to all the staff here who have worked so hard to deliver the required levels of service and quality. In some categories, we even scored above the 4 star level – earning 5 stars for cleanliness, for example.”

The Humber Royal recently underwent a £3 million refurbishment adding six extra bedrooms and a large function room in 2012. All 52 existing bedrooms have been redesigned with king-sized beds and new bathrooms complete with power showers. The restaurant and bar areas have been completely redesigned.

Since the refurbishment the Humber Royal has attracted increasing numbers of local diners, wedding receptions, celebrations and business functions.

The Hotel now offers the largest conference and banqueting facilities in North East Lincolnshire. “Our four star accreditation will help strengthen our position as the first choice for all major companies in the local area,” says Anne Bennett. “The facilities are purpose-built, supported by personal service and flexible locally-sourced menus.”

BEST KEPT SECRET IS OUT

The Cotswold House Hotel and Spa is celebrating after being recognised as 'Best Spa' in the 2012 Best Kept Secret Awards.

Paul Dixon, general manager of the Cotswold House Hotel and Spa, said: “I am delighted the spa at Cotswold House has won this award. Our spa is not just a part of the hotel; it is at the heart of it. All of our team have experienced the spa first-hand so that they have an understanding of our guest needs and this helps us anticipate and exceed expectations.”

The Cup Cake Bake Off!

On Sunday 22nd September we proudly supported National Cupcake Week by running a Charity Cupcake Bake Off.

With over 10 entries our voters were treated to some delicious varieties of cupcakes.

The overall winner was Miss Rowley, who baked some wonderful Red Velvet and Vanilla Cupcakes.

The event raised over £64.00 for charity. The winner chose to donate the prize money to Chipping Campden Preschool Playgroup. 

 

THE FOOD FESTIVAL WITH 'BITE'

The BITE 2013 Festival, which runs from 27 January to 2 February 2013 in Chipping Campden, will feature events with some of the UK’s most exciting chefs, working alongside Cotswold House's own head chef, Dave Watts, winner of the Good Food Guide 2013 Chef to Watch Award and Indunil Upatissa, the head chef of The Noel Arms. Indunil is himself two-times winner of the best Pub Curry Chef Award.

IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY

A lovely wood-burning stove for pizza and bread will be the new centre-piece of a refurbished and modernised restaurant area at the Hotel Grosvenor. The bar is also being re-located closer to the restaurant, which is set to become an all-day dining venue. Partial covering for the popular courtyard area means guests and visitors will be able to enjoy this outdoor area more often.

The reception area is also being relocated as part of these improvements, and general manager David Knight is expecting a busy spring and summer season. “We have listened to our guests and our staff, and we are aware of a couple of things that will enhance the experience of visiting and staying at the Grosvenor in Shaftesbury. We’ll implement these with the minimum of disruption so that all of our guests can continue to enjoy their stay.”

The Lugger Hotel in Cornwall was featured in The Times 'cool hotel guide' feature.

The inaugural Major Mayhem concluded on USPGA Saturday. Although the conditions were perfect no-one made a surge from the chasing pack & therefore The Suffolk's 'Rocket' Ron Hazell held on to his lead & finished 3 shots clear on 79 points. 2nd place went to Club Champion Chris Tate (76 points) on countback from Flempton's Marcus Lee. This unique event proved popular with guests & members alike & will continue in 2016.

Campden's Got Talent!

A fantastic night was had at Campden's Got Talent on Saturday 3rd August.

Judged by Bespoke Hotel's Chairman Robin Sheppard, Trelawney Kerrigan from the Pauline Quirke Academy in Evesham, Steve Sutherland from IPC Media and RSC actor Ed Bennett, 10 talented Chipping Campden locals performed for the winning title in our first Campden's Got Talent event.

Hosted by our General Manager Andrew Paul and Keyna Doran of the Creative Cows, we were also delighted to have performances from the very funny and talented poetess Fran Hill and singer/songwriter Elaine Binks. The evening was linked together with fabulous music performed by Jon Beynon and Geoff Carr of Generation Jones.

Congratulations to the winner Ellen Larson, and runner ups, Laurence Coote and Libby Akerman, and everyone else that took part! Campden certainly has a great weath of talent!

Thank you also to the judges and everyone who came along to support the event!

At the last count over £1000 was raised for the new fund specially created by the Creative Cows and the Noel Arms to help support local youngsters in need of financial assistance to develop their creative talent.

In August the Noel Arms and the Creative Cows launched "Campdens got talen", a fund raising event for "Campden Edge", our very own fund to help support local youngsters with finacial assistance to devlop their creative talent.

It was a huge success, we raised over £1000 and counting for the fund to date. 

 

Our sing for our supper evenings will continue to support this fund along with other activites which we will contine to run. For every one of our selected drinks brought on each evening, we will donate 50p to the fund. The aim is to get our local talent to perform every month in return for a voucher for supper and for anyone in the community to come and support us all.

At the Noel Arms Hotel (www.noelarmshotel.com) there’s a homely little patisserie, ideal for an afternoon cream tea. Master of the kitchen at this welcoming hostelry is talented Sri Lankan chef Indunil Upatissa, current title holder and the only chef to have won the ‘Pub Curry Chef of The Year’ award three times.

After a good night’s sleep in a spacious and well appointed room, I opted for Indunil’s Asian breakfast special – milk rice, coconut roti, yellow egg curry and fried onion relish – exotically different but delicious.

Indunil has his own highly creative take on contemporary British cuisine too and at dinner the previous evening I went for the pan-fried Cotswold pork tenderloin, with Dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage, apple sauce and Calvados gravy, while the missus plumped for the shoulder of light horn lamb, which came with garlic mash, peas and beans, glazed onion and lamb jus. Both dishes were triumphs of the culinary art form, beautifully presented, with just the right portion sizes.

Immediately across the street from the Noel Arms stands the sister Cotswold House Hotel & Spa (www.cotswoldhouse.com), a thoroughly contemporary four-star property housed in an elegant Georgian mansion. Restaurant Manager of the Year

The Chester Grosvenor is delighted to announce that Debbie Cappadonna, Restaurant Manager of the hotel’s La Brasserie has been named ‘Restaurant Manager of the Year’ at the 2016 Boutique Hotelier Personal Service Star Award, beating off competition from across the country, including 260 nominees from over 100 hotels.

By honouring the hardest working and most attentive staff members, the awards shed light on hospitality employees who go the extra mile to ensure their customers have the best possible experience. Having had her performance assessed by a judging panel including Andrew Love, Chairman of the Ritz Group, as well as Peter Hancock, Chief Executive of Pride of Britain Hotels, Debbie was recognised for her “infectious motivation and passion to see others succeed”, as well as her ability to spearhead “one of the most profitable trading periods in the hotel’s history”.

“It’s an honour to be recognised in this way, but recognition really should also go to my team that I’m extremely proud to be surrounded by”, commented Debbie. “We’ve had a fantastic period of trading across the summer, and this award is testament to the hard work and passion of the entire F&B team, including La Brasserie’s Head Chef Gareth and his talented brigade.”

The Chester Grosvenor was recognised as Employer of the Year at Cheshire Business Awards held at Chester Cathedral on Friday, 6th October, fighting off tough competition from Chester Zoo and the Rossendale Trust.

The Cheshire Business Awards welcomed some of the most respected businesses in the region, demonstrating the exceptionally high level of quality competition that Cheshire boasts. The award itself recognizes The Chester Grosvenor as an outstanding employer who has shown great vision and leadership, with policies supporting staff development, engagement and satisfaction, creating a positive and supportive workplace with a well-motivated team.

The Chester Grosvenor boats a significant number of team members who have grown and developed within the business, namely through the Simon Radley Kitchen Academy, which each year recruits 10 young and aspiring chefs on an apprenticeship scheme. These talented earn whilst they learn, working shoulder to shoulder with some of the best in business. Head Chef of La Brasserie, Gareth Jones, began his career at The Chester Grosvenor as a Demi Chef de Partie and now oversees the kitchen operation for the restaurant. The hotel’s Meeting & Events Manager is another prime example of someone who has relished the ‘Grow with Grosvenor’ ethos, joining the hotel at the age of 17 as a casual events waiter and now leading the meetings, events and banqueting operation.

The Chester Grosvenor has an impressive alumni that attribute successes to their careers to the training they received at the hotel. Celebrity chef Paul Hollywood often reflects on his time as Head Baker at the hotel, as does high profile chef and restaurateur Gary Usher, who began working in The Chester Grosvenor’s kitchens in 2000, where he claims to have gotten insight into working with chefs who had a clear passion and enthusiasm for what they do. Both chefs have publicly discussed their time at The Chester Grosvenor in the press, which is a true reflection on the hotel as an employer and one which encourages individual creativity.

New Guest Relations Manager

As part of The Chester Grosvenor’s ongoing dedication to excellence in hospitality, Danielle Facer has been appointed as the hotel’s first Guest Relations Manager. 

Danielle Facer was officially announced as the five-star hotel’s Guest Relations Manager after a year in the Head Receptionist’s role. Following a career in Guest Relations on international cruise liners and hotels, Danielle brings a great deal of experience to the hotel and in August 2017, her passion for customer service and natural fit for the position led to her promotion.

This new role encompasses all the departments that service the hotel’s guests, and working alongside the Hotel Manager, Danielle is directly responsible for assisting guests with any requirements that they may have, liaising with the wider teams. Requests can include such things as dinner reservations and spa appointments to welcoming VIP guests.

General Manager, Richard Grove comments: “We have always maintained exceptionally high levels of customer service throughout the hotel. However, the appointment of a dedicated Guest Relations Manager ensures that every single guest receives that ‘above and beyond’ attitude that we are famed for.

“Danielle has thrown herself into the challenges of this newly created position with passion, energy and the determination to succeed.  Since her new role began, she has already introduced several new reports and strategies for extracting and sharing guest information that will help the team to enhance guest stays, and ensure a truly memorable experience.”

Danielle is also responsible for collating all guest feedback and is fundamental to the smooth running and operation of the hotel. She daily monitors and responds to feedback and reviews which come through online review sites, in addition to hotel survey responses.
