The Elephant Court Hotel is in Kerala’s Idukki district a few hundred kilometres inland. Thekkady is an ideal destination for adventure travellers and nature lovers, home to the richly bio-diverse Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary elephant and tiger reserve with a wide variety of tropical flora and fauna, endangered species and a rich tribal culture. The sanctuary is bordered by mountain ridges and surrounds the Periyar Lake. The rolling hills and forests are home to spice plantations, small towns and villages.

Nearby attractions:

Trekking. Main trekking areas are Kurudumala near Kumily (4km from The Elephant Court), Pullumedu (19km), Ottakathalamedu (10km) and Grampi near Vandiperiyar (16km). A trek organised by the State Tourism Department starts daily at 7am from the boat landing station by the Periyar Lake.

Elephant Ride. The Elephant Court offers a customised elephant ride for guests through villages, with several stopovers. 10am to 5pm. Minimum duration: 30 minutes

Periyar Tiger Reserve Visit. Treks through the Periyar Tiger Reserve start at 9am and end at noon. Each trekking group consists of a maximum of five visitors, five guides and two forest officials. On this trek, prepare to meet elephants, Nilgirilangurs, giant squirrels and even tigers.

Bullock Cart Discoveries. Take a bullock cart ride to the nearby villages, vineyards, and crops including mango, tamarind, onion, sunflower, jasmine. An insight into the traditional ways of local farming, culture and lifestyles.

Jeep Safari to the exotic locale of Gavi. The route itself is a picturesque trail through the Western Ghats. Once you are in Gavi, there are several trails through the evergreen forests, where elephants roam, to camping sites and viewing points.

Plantation Tour. About 4,000 square kilometres of the Idukki district consists of spice plantations. There is an hour-long tour from the Elephant Court that takes you through these cool, green plantations to see how spices such as cardamom, pepper, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and tea are grown.

Nature Walk. A 3-hour nature walk from 7am to 10.30am, and between 2pm and 5pm. A maximum of five persons can trek at a time along each nature trail, accompanied by a trained tribal guide.

Jungle Scouting. Experience the jungle by night with the jungle scouting programme that is part of the regular night patrolling in the fringe eco-development zones of the tiger reserve. Up to eight visitors can join the scouting in one slot that lasts three hours.
