Where to find the Best Riverside Hotels

There’s something about a short break at a riverside hotel nestling by the riverbank that really adds another dimension to a holiday.  Strolls by the water, picnics in the sun, and a leisurely pace of life all seem to go hand in hand with a waterside location. But which are the best riverside hotels to visit for such an experience?

Take for example The Arrochar Hotel in Scotland.  On the banks of Loch Long, the 19th century hotel is in an enviable location that combines the tranquil waters with the surrounding mountainous landscape in the kind of idyll that fairy tales are made of.

However, for those after something a little closer to London, there’s also the aptly named Bridge Hotel in Chertsey.  Just 30 minutes from the buzz of the city, this riverside hotel sits quietly on the banks of the River Thames with spectacular views over the hotel’s own tributary, as well as the main river and the far reaching meads beyond the historic Chertsey Bridge.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” So the thinking goes in The Wind in The Willows, and so it is that where there’s a river, one hopes there is a boat to sail away in as well. Which is precisely the case at Stonehouse Court in the glorious Cotswolds.

This 17th century manor house sits in six acres of stunning grounds overlooking the Stroud Water Canal and rolling hills of the Stroud Valley.  Surrounded by beautiful gardens, including a croquet lawn for a quintessentially British summertime experience, it’s also a wonderful spot for walking, picnicking, taking a boat trip, or hiring your own and pottering along the canal at a more leisurely pace.

The summer offers so many wonderful possibilities for whiling away the time in beautiful outdoor bliss, but whether it’s cities, countryside or somewhere near the coast, a little water goes a long, long way.

Turn off, tune out and drop in: spa hotel for a digital detox

After the traditional indulgence of Christmas, we now find ourselves entering a new period of tradition; the January detox.

For some that’s all about green juices and no carbs, going alcohol free or joining the gym, having a spa hotel break or maybe even all of those things. For some, however, those few days off over the festive season were a welcome reminder of what life is like away from the computer (with the exception of Instagramming your Christmas dinner and New Year selfies of course). All of which leads to the need for a digital detox this January.

It’s an almost impossible thing to escape from the phone, the nearest WiFi connection, your TV, the new Apple Watch you got for Christmas, as well as any other devices that determine your daily routine – we need them… after all, how did anyone ever navigate a city without the use of Google maps? The thought of going without is also something of a panic-inducing concept for the first 24 hours, until you start thinking about what a digital detox really means.

In brief a digital detox means not having to answer your work emails, the phone or making life look postcard perfect in 140 characters or less on any number of social media platforms. In short, it means a lot less stress. But let’s think of what it really looks like to steer clear of all things techy for a brief period of time.

As I write I am sitting listening to nothing but crickets by the pool in Barbados. I have slept all day, drifting in and out of sleep as I read my book, waking only to swim, eat, talk to my best friends (no phone involved) and maybe go for a dip in the sea. I have not looked at my phone once (although I appreciate the irony of writing an article for the Internet on this subject), and while WiFi is available I cannot think why I would bother when I’m so busy with better things?

I am not telling you this to make you jealous, although that is part of the joy of a good holiday, but rather because this is what makes a real digital detox such an unapologetic pleasure. Unlike that feeling where you go without your favourite foods for a week, a digital detox is all about gain, and there are several ways to do it. Heading into winter sun at the grottiest and most bitter time of the year in the UK, or you can go down the spa hotel route complete with a facial, massage and some professional guidance thrown in for good measure.

Personal preferences on the spa front includes The Lugger Hotel, Lifehouse Spa and Hotel and Cotswold House Spa. The Lugger has recently been named ‘Best Seaside Hotel’ by the Sunday Times, it’s surrounded by footpaths, cliffs and headlands on the Cornish Coast (which have the added bonus of almost no mobile phone signal should the itch to check that iPhone arise). You can even opt to stay in the appropriately titled self-catering cottage the Hideaway, to really complete the escapist vibe.

Then Lifehouse Spa and Hotel in Essex is a contemporary building surrounded by beautiful gardens and a dedication to all things health and wellbeing. Food frequently comes from the vegetable garden and what they don’t know about mind, body and soul isn’t worth knowing… even if you had mobile signal, there’s not time to use it with that many treatments on offer.

Meanwhile, Cotswold House Hotel and Spa has an award winning spa and is in the heart of Gloucestershire, so there’s lots of incentive to head out into the countryside and explore – a much better thing to do than check emails. However, it’s by the pool looking out onto their spectacular gardens that you really get a sense of peace and tranquility.

So there you have it, our guide to kick starting 2016 as you mean to go on. Or, to put a bit of a twist on Timothy Leary’s famous quote, all the reasons to turn off, tune out and drop in to somewhere different this month… at least for a little while.

Will You Feel The Beat at Our Country House Hotels?

If music be the food of love then The Welcombe Hotel, Spa and Golf Club, one of our great country house hotels,  is the place to be this April.

Stratford upon Avon’s country house hotel isn’t short on reasons to visit, but nonetheless it doesn’t do us any harm to have one more, and on 24th, 25th and 26th April it comes in the form of a series of operatic favourites, a first for one of our country house hotels.

The Welcombe Hotel

You don’t have to be an opera enthusiast to appreciate the finer qualities of La Traviata, Tosca and Madame Butterfly; they are, quite simply, beautiful stories. So while it is always an uncompromising joy to see opera performed on the stage at the Royal Albert Hall or London’s Covent Garden Opera House, there is something rather poetic about the tales being told in the sociable and relaxing surrounds of such an elegant hotel.

The Love: Lost and Found collection is performed on the Friday night by soprano Melinda Hughes, tenor Jonathan Stoughton and pianist Jeremy Limb, and the evening is a sensual feast of Champagne, fine wine and good food; all the ingredients needed to be suitably sated and relaxed in one of our country house hotels.

A weekend of entertainment

However, the evening’s love-in is followed by a morning of serenading over breakfast on the Saturday where the trio pickup on a more eclectic mix entitled Operetta to Cabaret (think West Side Story, Merry Widow and The Mikado). Then sit back for another evening of decadence with a musical backdrop, and a leisurely Sunday breakfast.

So, are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…

Finding a short break hotel with Freeview TV is also a great way to add more value for money. If you plan to be travelling with kids, as much as we can be loathe to admit it, TV is an important consideration.
