Everyone’s talking about Hotel Gotham

Can you feel it? The buzz, the palpable hum of excitement? I am not hiding my excitement about the opening of Hotel Gotham, Manchester’s newest five star hotel, at all well. But I’m not the only one.

In the weeks preceding the hotel’s opening last month, local and national press have been equally effervescent about it, with its 1930s interiors that have brought the 80 year old building and former bank back to life. Manchester Evening News enthused over the “swanky private members bar”, “stunning views across the city” and the “playful nods to that banking past” with gold ingot toiletry displays and moneybag-style laundry bags.

Much love has also been expressed for the video that’s shown to guests at the Hotel Gotham, which gives Manchester a New York twist. It shows the city’s glamorous side and features landmarks such as the central library, the big wheel and China Town, all epitomizing the hotel’s tagline “Manhattan comes to Manchester”.

Manchester is seeing an increasing number of people visiting for weekend getaways, exploring all the history and culture it has to offer, and as the doors swung open at Hotel Gotham, it can now claim its title as the second five star hotel in the city, although no other can stake a claim to the accolade of ‘Europe’s sexiest hotel’. Perhaps if they too channeled their inner Gatsby then they would get that sensual feeling. Hotel Gotham Manchester

While we have waxed lyrical about the hotel’s history and the narrative surrounding it however, it is the service unlike any other that’s really getting our hearts pumping. Only guests with a reservation either at the hotel or in the restaurant are allowed in because the name of the game here is privacy and luxury.

Rooms range from £150 per night to £1,000 per night for an inner sanctum room, especially good for those with a hidden desire to be Batman and have an utterly clandestine break. On which note, the hotel’s name does come from the comic book antihero’s home town and a nod to his secretive nature comes in the form of bat shaped ‘do not disturb’ signs on the bedroom doors.

Of course there’s more to talk about, and no doubt we will, but for now the anticipation is over and it’s time to celebrate a summer with serious sex appeal…

Bespoke’s Newest Family Member – The Chester Grosvenor

Spring is in the air, the Easter eggs have been well and truly demolished and the lambs are leaping around the fields, so it’s the perfect time of year for Bespoke Hotels to welcome a new member to the family. Stand up, The Chester Grosvenor.

Celebrating 150 years of style and elegance this year, the former Tudor Inn has received princes from pretty much the day it opened, not to mention playing host to some of Hanoverian politics’ bawdier moments.

The Chester Grosvenor - Bespoke Hotel

Today it has made a name for itself as one of the UK’s leading hotels,  a bastion of tradition and taste in the heart of the historic city of Chester.   While that history is palpable in the architecture and gravitas of the hotel, its contemporary renovation makes it a luxurious destination for 21st century travellers. The interiors have been very cleverly choreographed, working harmoniously and sympathetically with the rich past of the location and building.

Key amongst its highlights are a decadent spa and Michelin Star restaurant ‘Simon Radley’. They also do a mean afternoon tea, which is so much more than your bog standard triangle sandwiches and scones – check out the Decadent Champagne Afternoon Tea  for more details.

If you haven’t been to Chester then now is a good time to hop in the car. The Roman city is charming, particularly in the summer time. Boutiques abound and if you go when the horse racing is at its peak then it possesses a colourful and buzzing vibe that’s hard to beat.

The Chester Grosvenor is positioned slap bang in the middle of all the action, which of course is exactly what you want on a city weekend getaway. (Although for the moments when you do need time out, you do of course have that aforementioned spa to explore and enjoy.

With so much available by way of hospitality, it’s very rare these days, to discover a hotel that has the detailed elegance that this one has, particularly in the middle of a city, but The Grosvenor Chester has made its mark throughout history and its reputation is well earned.

So, round of applause, wave hello, and a hearty embrace to The Chester Grosvenor, the newest member of the Bespoke Hotel family.

Naughty Has Never Been Nicer at this New Boutique Hotel

Christian Grey may well have been the naughtiest name on everybody’s lips last month, but those of us looking for something seriously scandalous are getting our knickers in a twist for the new boutique hotel in Manchester –  Hotel Gotham.

Having opened it’s newly-refurbished doors on 7th April 2015, the hotel team has one mission: “to make it the sexiest hotel in Europe”, and my goodness have they achieved that!

The listed art deco building in the centre of Manchester was once a bank, and has retained a number of its original features designed by Edwin Lutyens, which have been recognised as architectural marvels. However, those same features have been offset by some spectacular innovation, such as the double height space for a feature staircase between the 6th and 7th floors as well as a rooftop bar and club.

As with any story that has real sex appeal, renovations were preceded by a healthy dose of scandal in 2010 when it was alleged that safe deposit boxes containing jewellery and master tapes from Joy Division were found on the site. Since then however, it’s been less about rock star rumours and more about five star glamour.

Retaining its original charm, this boutique hotel still has the enviable elegance of art deco at its finest, but polished and teased into a destination fit for the 21st century. It boasts seductive slate hues, shocks of bright colour when you least expect it and quirky details scattered throughout to make you giggle with utter delight.

If Rennie Mackintosh was making a 21st century comeback, this would be his masterpiece. If Gatsby had hosted a party in Manchester he would have thrown it here. And if Jordan Belfort had really wanted to blow a fortune in style then he would have called Hotel Gotham.

Sure there’s been some interior renovations, but this isn’t the kind of magic an interior designer can create. This is about history, architecture, style, vision, architecture and location.

It isn’t just a boutique hotel, it’s a treat that’s definitely worth waiting for… and the wait is finally over!

What makes a romantic getaway?

 boutique hotel bedroom

Ask any couple what they think makes the ultimate romantic getaway and you will probably get slightly different answers from each partner.  Speaking to a friend recently she said her husband’s idea of the perfect break was sun, sea, sand and surfing, while hers was sun, sea, sand and no surfing.  We will leave it to you to figure out what happened on the honeymoon.

There are a few silver screen standards that go without saying when it comes to romance, candlelit dinners and beautiful views for example.  On the flip side, while it’s highly entertaining, the upcoming release of the 50 Shades of Grey film on Valentine’s Day probably isn’t high on the serious priority list for most.

Nonetheless, at Bespoke we have our own ideas about what is a truly romantic getaway in a hotel, many of them actually, but here’s a few to whet the appetite.

A waterside location

At The Lugger Hotel in Cornwall there are a lot of things that make it special – it is really a chocolate-box perfect kinda romantic getaway.  Y’know, service, sea and utterly timeless.

It is a toss up as to whether the best part of The Lugger Hotel is the beautiful pared-down luxe design or the location overlooking the sea, cliffs and headland.  Perhaps it’s a combination of the two – either way, it’s perfect.

Historic atmosphere

A lot of the time what really makes a hotel stand out is something intangible – a combination of the history, the architecture and the service, all of which make up an enchanting atmosphere.  The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftsbury has atmosphere in spades.

Once a medieval posting inn, it now has the gravitas of a building with a past, but, having had a nice contemporary makeover.  There is a cosy pub vibe throughout and is situated so that you can explore Salisbury, Bath, and the Dorset coastline with ease.  It’s the ideal place to potter along for the weekend hand-in-hand.

A fairytale castle

What can we say?  Cinderella would have been proud of this one.  No matter how ball busting you happen Stonefield Castle on the shores of Loch Fyne is the sort of fairytale location that will make you go weak at the knees.

Bespoke - Stonefield Castle

With a history dating back to 1837 it showcases Scottish baronial architecture at its finest and still has original touches such as wood paneling and marble fireplaces.  Visit when there’s snow on the ground or flowers sprouting along the water’s edge, it’s a magic romantic getaway.

 A private hot tub

If all else fails, a private hot tub is always a bit of a winner, and Bermondsey Square Hotel in London has a suite (Lucy) with its own hot tub overlooking the city.  The hotel is utterly contemporary with design inspired by the Beatles and all suites named with a nod to their most famous songs.

It is located for couples wanting to spend a little time exploring the sites, but then again, you can see the London Eye from the hot tub, so what you do with your time is up to you!
